Most studies indicate that limiting consumption of red meat is beneficial to health, and no food has caused as big of a scrutiny in both medical and culinary circles as red meat.

Numerous studies have pointed to the negative medical effects seen in people who overeat red meat. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified processed meat as a carcinogen and red meat as a probable one.

Red meat includes beef, lamb, veal, venison and goat. So how much red meat is too much red meat?

Overall, compounds found in red meat cause inflammation and irritation to human body tissue.

Eating red meat daily triples the risk of creating trimethylamine N-oxide, an organic compound associated with a heightened risk of heart disease.

“It’s a minor irritation, but it adds up over the years and it leads to different kinds of damages,” said Stephen Kopecky, a cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic in the US, one of the leading medical centers in the world.

Kopecky advises eating no more than 85 grams a day, or less than 600 grams a week.

Studies have repeatedly demonstrated that high intake of red meat or processed meats is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes, said Jennifer Haythe, an associate professor of medicine at Columbia University in New York City.

Experts say that in the past, human only consumed meat in small amounts and intermittently, eating mostly vegetables, legumes, fruits, grains and plants.

How much meat consumption does Islam recommend?

Before modern science was able to discover the harmful effects of overeating meat, this was revealed 14 centuries ago by Islam’s holy Prophet.

In several narrations, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his successors have advised their followers to consume meat in moderation and to avoid eating it every day.

In one famous narration, the Prophet said eating meat continuously for forty days will make a person cruel and stone-hearted.

Muslims are also only permitted to eat Halal meat. In order for meat to be considered Halal, animals must be slaughtered by a Muslim, who says a blessing, and the animal’s throat must be slit by hand, not by machine. Once killed, the animal’s blood must drain completely.
