US is by far the most heavily armed society in the world
The United States is by far the most heavily armed society in the world, with about 121 firearms for every 100 residents, and the number of gun deaths has climbed steadily in recent years.
The US has had at least 45 mass shootings since the beginning of 2021, according to an analysis.
The FBI considers an incident to be a mass shooting if four or more people are shot, wounded, or killed, excluding the gunman.
At least 30 people have been killed in US mass shootings in the last month alone. Those events draw headlines, but they typically account for less than 1% of firearms deaths each year.
Some 43,539 Americans died of gun violence last year, with more than half of those due to suicide, according to the Gun Violence Archive, a research group.
US President Joe Biden faced increased pressure on Friday to stem gun violence amid the mass shootings across the country, but he faces an uphill battle to significantly change the country's permissive firearms laws.
"This has to end. It's a national embarrassment," Biden said at a White House press conference alongside Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.
The latest mass shooting took place on Thursday April 15, when 8 people were killed and several others wounded in a massacre at a FedEx facility.
