Palestinian FM urges African Union to revoke Israel’s observer status

Palestine’s foreign minister has urged the African Union (AU) to reverse a decision by the pan-African bloc’s decision to grant the occupying Israeli regime observer status at the continental organization.

Riyad al-Maliki made the remarks in an open letter to the African Union’s Executive Council as the bloc met in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Abbas on Thursday for the 39th session of the executive council.

Maliki called on the bloc to stand by Palestine and reject a tacit endorsement of present-day colonialism amid Israeli war crimes.

"The attempt by some to support Israel's application for observer status in the African organization has rightly provoked sentiments of shock and rejection by those who wish to see Africa preserve and defend its proud legacy of successfully defeating racist colonialism and oppression," Palestine’s top diplomat said.

Maliki urged the AU to listen to African leaders who “vehemently protest attempts to override the African Union's Charter and founding principles as well as circumvent the will of the peoples of the continent by fast-tracking a unilateral decision to grant Israel an observer status at the African Union.”

“Today, I write so that you may hear from the Palestinian people, who have historically and unwaveringly stood on the solid foundation of support to our African sisters and brothers. I write to ask that you stand by Palestine and your peoples' legacy and reject a tacit endorsement of present-day colonialism,” the letter added.

Israel’s observer status in African Union is dividing continent

The bloc’s recent decision to grant Israel an observer status in the bloc threatens the continent’s unity organization.

The Ethiopia-based AU is a continental bloc that represents all 55 Member States, most of whom suffered terribly at the hands of repressive colonialists.

For decades, African countries have supported the Palestinians' struggle against Israeli occupation and oppresion, seeing in it parallels with their own anti-colonial movements.

Likewise, the African Union has not hesitated to criticize Israeli violations of international law and the occupation of Palestinian lands.

African nations have condemned Israel’s barbaric crimes against Palestinians, including the recent bombardment of the besieged Gaza Strip.

In April, US-based Human Rights Watch accused Israel of crimes against humanity by pursing policies of "apartheid" and persecution against Palestinians.

The word apartheid is often associated with South Africa. Apartheid was a system of institutionalized racial segregation that existed in South Africa from 1948 until the early 1990s.

The system was characterized by an authoritarian political culture based on white supremacy, which ensured that South Africa was dominated politically, socially, and economically by the nation's minority white population.
