Unlike Christianity, confessing sins to others is prohibited in Islam

According to the holy religion of Islam, confessing sins to other people is forbidden. But in Christianity and some other religions, people are encouraged to confess their sins to a religious figure or to a trusted person.

in Islam, God is the only one who forgives sins and people can only confess their sins to Allah.

Even the Holy Prophet Muhammad cannot forgive one's sins.

In chapter 4 of the Quran, verse 64, God says: " And if, when they wronged themselves, they had come to you, [O Muhammad], and asked forgiveness of Allah and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would have found Allah Accepting of repentance and Merciful."

According to Islam, purification of sins takes place with a sincere repentance, voluntary renunciation of all kinds of evil and the determination not to return.

Announcing this decision to Allah through prayer is called “repentance”. The prayer of forgiveness of sins is called “istigfar”.

Neither repentance nor forgiveness has stereotyped or special places for them. Mankind presents his condition and wishes to Allah with this intention. Sins and the intention of a person remain hidden between the person and Allah.

Asking Allah’s forgiveness is recommended numerous times in the Quran. Allah has promised to forgive the sins of humankind no matter how many sins he committed if a person turns to Allah and has the intention to abandon them.

There are many names that express Allah’s forgiveness which are mentioned both in the Quran and in the words of Prophet Muhammed.

Along with repentance and forgiveness, it is mentioned in the Quran that good deeds outweigh past sins. Choosing to become a Muslim is a good decision; as good deeds eliminate all his sins before the person choose to become a Muslim.

Along with all these, a Muslim can also pray for the forgiveness of sins of other people, whether they are relative or not, and whether they are alive or dead.
