Iran congratulates Brazil’s Lula on presidential election win
Iran has congratulated Brazil’s president-elect Inacio Lula da Silva on his election win, calling for further expansion of relations between the two countries.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran hopes that age-old relations between the two countries, which are characterized with goodwill and mutual respect, would expand more than before under management of the president-elect,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan’ani said on Monday.
He added that relations between Tehran and Brasilia will turn 120-year-old next year.
“Relations between the two countries have been growing in past years, especially in the areas of economy and trade,” Kan’ani said.
He added, “In view of numerous potentialities in bilateral and multilateral relations, the Islamic Republic of Iran hopes these relations would be strengthened and deepened in various fields under Mr. Lula as president.”
Lula on Sunday defeated incumbent Jair Bolsonaro in an election that marked a stunning comeback for the leftist leader and the end of the country's most right-wing government in decades.
He had 50.8% of votes compared with 49.2% for Bolsonaro with 99.1% of voting machines counted, which the Supreme Electoral Court said was enough to "mathematically define" the outcome of the race.
