Hamas praises South Africa’s visa exemption for Palestinians

The Gaza-based Hamas resistance movement welcomed South Africa's historic decision to exempt Palestinians from visa requirements, saying the move was a message of solidarity with Palestine.

“Hamas movement welcomes the decision of South Africa about exempting Palestinian citizens from entry visas to enter the country,” Hamas said in a statement.

The statement said the move was appreciated and reflects solidarity with the Palestinian people.

“We also call on all countries to take similar measures towards Palestinians who face the Israeli occupation’s fascism and racism,” the statement said.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki also welcomed the historic step by South Africa. Al-Maliki saw the decision as a new message of solidarity from South Africa.

The South African government has exempted Palestinian citizens holding Palestinian passports from the entry visa requirement.

A memorandum from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa to the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates confirmed the implementation of the decision.

Following the decision, Palestinians will receive entry visas at all South African airports, ports and border crossings for 90 days without visas from the country's embassies.

Relations between Palestine and South Africa have a long history of solidarity and mutual support based on their common struggle against oppression and injustice.

During the apartheid era in South Africa, Palestinians expressed solidarity with the anti-apartheid movement and supported the people of South Africa in their quest for freedom and equality. Similarly, South Africans were inspired by the Palestinian fight for self-determination.
