African Union chief says Israel’s strike on Palestinian hospital in Gaza is 'war crime'

The African Union chief Moussa Faki Mahamat on Tuesday accused Israel of a "war crime" following the deadly strike on a hospital in the Gaza strip.

"There are no words to fully express our condemnation of Israel's bombing of a Gaza hospital today, killing hundreds of people," Faki said in a statement, calling for the international community to act.

"Targeting a hospital, considered a safe haven under International Humanitarian Law, is a war crime. The International Community must act now," he added.

Djibouti’s Health Minister Ahmed Robleh Abdilleh said the bombing of a hospital and using prohibited phosphorous ammunition is genocide.

He said bombs “will not quench the Palestinian people's thirst for freedom.”

Israel has been raining bombs on the Gaza Strip for the past 12 days since Gaza-based resistance movement Hamas launched Operation al-Aqsa Storm against Israel in response to the regime's campaign of aggression, violation and bloodshed against Palestinians.

On Tuesday, more than 500 people, including women and children, lost their lives in an Israeli airstrike on al-Ahli Baptist Hospital. Reports indicate that thousands of Palestinians were present at the hospital when the attack took place.

The health ministry in Gaza now says a total of 3,478 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli air raids while over 12,000 others have sustained injuries.

The indiscriminate bombing by Israel, particularly the attack on a hospital in the coastal region, has sparked outrage and widespread condemnation.
