South Africa asks ICC to declare Israel as apartheid regime

The South African government intends to petition the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to declare Israel an apartheid regime.

South Africa’s Foreign Minister Naledi Pando said her country and Palestine were currently working on formulating a plan towards referring Israel to the ICC and the ICJ, which are both located in The Hague, in the Netherlands.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned Israel on Tuesday as he chaired an extraordinary summit of BRICS nations, accusing the regime of “war crimes” and "genocide" in Gaza.

Pretoria was hosting a virtual meeting of BRICS -- a group of major emerging economies that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa -- aimed at ending Israel’s barbaric war against Palestinians.

"The collective punishment of Palestinian civilians through the unlawful use of force by Israel is a war crime. The deliberate denial of medicine, fuel, food and water to the residents of Gaza is tantamount to genocide," Ramaphosa said.

On Tuesday, South Africa’s Parliament voted on a non-binding resolution to close the Israeli Embassy in the country and cut diplomatic relations with the occupying regime until Israel agrees to a ceasefire.

Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7 after the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas launched the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm in response to the regime's decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.

Israel has also blocked water, food, and electricity to Gaza, plunging the coastal strip into a humanitarian crisis.

The Government Media Office in Gaza announced in a report on Thursday that at least 14,854 Palestinians, including more than 6,150 children and 4,000 women, have been killed and over 36,000 others injured in the Israeli strikes.

According to the report, 60 percent of homes in Gaza have either been destroyed or damaged due to the aggression.
